Sydney Melbourne coastal road trip.

As it goes with all road trips – we expect to spend a couple of unforgettable days with people close to our heart. And perhaps one of the most iconic road trips is the coastal Sydney to Melbourne drive. It is full of amazing scenery and a thousand things to do, so hopefully the only problem you will have is deciding which of the locations you are going to visit. So, how should your trip go?

Day 1

If you start your road trip from Sydney, naturally you will go south. Your road trip won’t actually start until you exit the Royal National Park and hit the Grand Pacific Drive. If you want to take a break, you can stop to go for a swim, but really, you will be so intrigued by the sights that you might not even feel the need to take a break. Make a few more stops along the way and visit Illawarra, and the town of Kiama, or the Seven Mile Beach. End your day in Nowra. You will not feel homesick for a single second in this charming town.

Day 2

Next stop: white sandy beaches of Jervis Bay. If you are taking this trip, you absolutely should not miss the chance to see this wonder, but don’t stay too long, since there is a lot of ground to cover. Mimosa Rocks National Park might just be your most memorable stop, because the nature is simply amazing. If you can, try to squeeze in a trip to Tilba Tilba. Either way, head to Gipsy Point to spend the night and breathe in the fresh air, filled with sounds of nature.

Day 3

Depending on how much time you have, think about making a few other stops. However, if you don’t have too much time, head towards Croajingolong National Park. You will want to take your time once you get there, since there are so many things to see. Trust us, you will definitely spend the entire day there. Before the night falls, hit the road again and spend the night in Cabbage Tree Creek.

Day 4

You are almost there, but you should stop at the Gippsland Lakes. These wonderful lakes are best explored by boat, so leave your car for the day, and get ready to spend the day on water. Kayaking is very popular there, so if you are a fan, you can give it a go. If you don’t know how to kayak, no worries! You can try it out for the first time. The more memories you make – the better. If you can drive during the night, head towards Phillip Island, famous for it’ penguins. If not, get a good night’s sleep and get back on the road bright and early.

Day 5

Spend the day at Phillip Island, and try to see as many penguins as you can. The long walks on the beach are what it is all about here, and you will not be able to get enough of the scenery. Once you gather enough willpower to say goodbye to Phillip Island, head towards Melbourne, and slowly bring your journey to its end. However, if you don’t feel like going back home just yet, repeat the trip, but this time go the other way.

More useful tips

This coastal drive is great for bigger groups, so take a look at bus hire in Sydney to find something that will fit your group. Don’t worry if you don’t manage to complete the whole routine the way you’ve planned it. That being said, keep in mind that there are a lot of places to visit, and a lot of amazing things to see and try out, so when planning your route – give yourself some breathing space. Plans are great, but you never know when you are going to hit traffic, or come across a place that you will just want to spend an extra hour at. Prepare a lot of good music and games you can play on the go, to make sure your trip doesn’t have a single dull moment. Make sure you have a designated driver, and a good co-pilot and have a safe trip!
