exciting things to do in Las Vegas

Las Vegas the city that surprised me

Las Vegas, the city that surprised me, was on my travel bucket list for years, yet I kept avoiding it. I expected casinos and bright lights, but what I found was a city surrounded by deserts, canyons and natural wonders that completely changed my mind.

Why I Avoided Las Vegas for So Long

Honestly, from the outside the city felt like something that was not for me. I am not much of a casino kind of guy, and I usually look for budget stays and try to find the soul of the place I am visiting.

On the other hand, Las Vegas is one of the most famous and most popular cities in the world. I knew I had to make it there someday.

So after a bit of research online on the exciting things to do in Las Vegas, I made my list and set out on a new adventure, somewhat hesitantly.

The Las Vegas Strip lit up at night

What happened next was truly remarkable. I am so glad I made it to Vegas and did not let Sin City’s reputation keep me away.

First Night on the Las Vegas Strip

After landing, I checked into a boutique hotel not far from the Strip, where all the famous resorts and casinos are located. On the first night, I was thrilled just to walk around and soak in Las Vegas’s most famous landmark.

Wandering the Strip and checking out the crazy resorts with their unique themes was a lot of fun. I had seen this place in movies and on travel blogs a million times, and finally I was actually there.

I did try my hand at a few slot machines, but as I said, I am not much of a casino kind of guy. I also travel on a budget, so I did not want to waste money on things I just didn’t enjoy.

Paris Las Vegas hotel with its Eiffel Tower replica on the Strip
Paris Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The property is owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment Corp. As its name suggests, its theme is the city of Paris, France; it includes a half scale, 541-foot (165 m) tall replica of the Eiffel Tower, a sign in the shape of the Montgolfier balloon, a two-thirds size Arc de Triomphe, a replica of La Fontaine des Mers, and a 1,200-seat theatre called Le Théâtre des Arts.

How the Mojave Desert Changed My Mind About Las Vegas

My love affair with Las Vegas really started the next day. I knew I had to explore the city and its outskirts properly to get to know the place, so I booked an ATV ride into the Mojave Desert. This is where my perception of Vegas started to change.

Riding at my own pace, I fell in love with the desert. The terrain and landscape were fantastic, and I wanted to see more. I looked around and found so many tours that take you through the natural wonders surrounding Las Vegas.

I quickly understood that the city was not all about crazy entertainment and blinding lights. There was much more here.

Things I Did in Las Vegas Besides Gambling

Over the next couple of days, I filled my itinerary with experiences I never expected from Vegas:

  • An ATV ride through the Mojave Desert
  • Hikes in the landscapes around the city
  • History tours
  • Kayaking to a breathtaking cave
  • A half-day trip to see the famous Hoover Dam
