Jumped From The World’s Highest Bungee Bridge At 216 Meters.

A bungee jump had always been on my list, and the thought of doing one made my trip to South Africa far more exciting. I finally jumped from the Bloukrans Bridge in Tsitsikamma, the world’s highest bridge bungee jump at 216 metres (709 ft) above the Bloukrans River. Here is how my jump from the world’s highest bungee bridge went, from the harness to the freefall.

Bloukrans Bridge: The World’s Highest Bridge Bungee Jump

The jump is organised by Face Adrenalin in Tsitsikamma, from the Bloukrans Bridge. At 216 metres (709 ft) above the Bloukrans River, it is the highest bridge bungee jump in the world.

I was driving the scenic Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth when I stopped at the bridge in Nature’s Valley. I was barely prepared for what was coming.

Getting Ready for the Jump

After signing my life away (I’m kidding: the company has a 100% safety record, with no one ever injured or killed), I got harnessed up. Then I sat and waited for my turn to take the plunge.

The weather was a bit murky and I worried the rain would ruin my bungee plans. Luckily, it wasn’t windy.

While I waited for the doors of the bridge to open, the Face Adrenalin team shared their own experiences and did their best to motivate me.

The Walk to the Platform

Moments later I crossed the caged-in walkway under the bridge, which is an experience on its own, and reached the platform I would jump from. The vibe was positive and energising: the crew cracked jokes, took pictures with me and jammed to the music.

Strapping In

I was asked to sit on a stool while they fastened my ankle straps, tightened the padding and attached the back-up harness around my shoulders and waist.

The Jump: 216 Metres of Freefall

Once I was strapped in, two guys grabbed me under each shoulder and led me to the edge of the platform. They positioned me so my toes were sticking out over the drop. At this point I was terrified, but focused.

My heart started pounding as the countdown began: 3… 2… 1… BUNGEEE! The next moment I was swinging upside down. I felt like a free bird, with a mix of fear and joy.

Now I laugh at myself for being so scared of the idea of bungee jumping. It was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life, and I got to share it with hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
