Huaraz is a jump off point to Laguna 69 and numerous treks in the region. Huaraz is located at 3,090 meters above the sea level. The city of Ancash of whose Huaraz is the capital is home to thirty snow-capped peaks towering over 6,000 meters high.

Getting There:

By Air:

Huaraz is served by its regional airport Comandante FAP Germán Arias Graziani Airport (ATA). The airport is located 20 kilometers (12 mi) northwest of Huaraz, at the village of Anta. LC Peru is the only airline that operates a triweekly scheduled service between the capital city Lima and Huaraz.

Taxis and Combis operate from the airport to the city center. A taxi will cost about S12 ( USD 3.5)

By Road:

Huaraz is approximately 8 hours coach drive from Lima. Movil Tours, Oltrusa and Huaraz Tours have regular service from Lima. Ticket would usually cost between S/.30-S/.80 (USD 10 and USD 25).

Transportes Linea has a daily service between Huaraz and Trujillo. The bus journey takes 9 hours and ticket would cost between S/.30 and S/.65 depending on the type of service.

Getting Around:

The city of Huaraz is quite small and can be best explored by foot. There are tuk-tuks (Moto Taxis) and Combis to places in the outskirts of Huaraz.

What To See?

Pumacayán Hill

Pumacayán Hill is a view point  located a few blocks away from the main square. There is no entrance fees to get to the top of the view point.

Ruins Of Wilkahuaain

The Wilcahuain archaeological site located 7 kms outside the city of Huaraz. The ruins date to about 600 to 900 AD and the Wari Empire. The main 3 – story building housed the mummies of the Wari ancestors.

Sechín

Sechin is a cerimonial center that displays walls covered with carved stones and walls inside are covered with mural paintings. Its located in the south of Casma.

Chavín de Huántar

This UNSESCO’s world heritage site was built in 1200 A.D. The complex is composed of ceremonial halls and pyramidal structures built in stone.

Mercado central has stalls where a full set of lunch is served for S/.5.

For Vegetarians:

Comedor Vegetariano ( Open from Mon-Fri 9:00am-3:00pm)

Located in Mercado Central, 2nd Floor. They serve a fixed menu which includes big soup, small salad, tea, and a main dish for S/.6.

Where To Stay?

Vaca House Lodging:

Vaca House Lodging is located in a quiet area, a little off the main square. They have dorms priced from USD 10 which includes breakfast.

Andes Camp Hostel:

Andes Camp is located at a 5 minutes walk away from the main square. They offer a bed in a 5 bed dorm from USD 14. The price does not include breakfast.

Akilpo Inn

Akilpo Inn is located 200 meters from the bus station. The hostel offers a bed in 6 bed dorm for USD 10. The price includes breakfast.

Casa De Ana B&B

Casa De Ana is located in a quite neighborhood. They offer a bed in a 4 bed dorm for USD 17 including breakfast.
